The Rural Center for Sustainable Development (CRDD) of Bas Boen joins the West Departmental Direction of MARNDR, and the Cooperative of Chanpyon Farmers of the Cul-de-Sac plain to launch the 2013-2014 winter bean planting season

The Rural Center for Sustainable Development (CRDD) of Bas Boen, implemented by the Feed the Future West/WINNER project, funded by USAID, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), and the Cooperative of Chanpyon Farmers of the Cul-de-Sac plain (COPACPLA), launched the “2013-2014 Winter Bean Planting Season”, Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 at the CRDD of Bas Boen, located in the Commune of Ganthier. The audience was composed of representatives from farmer associations, the private sector, government and local officials, as well as representatives from USAID and the Feed the Future West/WINNER project.
The Minister of Agriculture, Thomas Jacques, who officially launched the planting season in the spotlight of the Haitian press, said he is very confident about the success of this bean season, reminding all the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture to boost agricultural production in the country.
The bean planting season this year comes from a strategy to improve food security and incomes of the rural population in Haiti. As part of this planting season, the CRDD of Bas Boen, with the support of MARNDR, will directly supervise more than 2000 farmers, members of farmer associations, in sowing about 2500 hectares in the Cul-de-Sac plain. Expected yields will reach an average of 1.2 ton per hectare.
The Director of the Feed the Future West/WINNER project, Jean-Robert Estimé, stressed on the need to always maintain the habit of gathering farmers to launch the planting seasons, and he said he is very pleased that the CRDD and Chanpyon associations took over from the FTF West/WINNER project the responsibility to organize the launching, in collaboration with the West Departmental Direction of the MARNDR.
